At Communion Services

If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine.   Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing.  Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing.   If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Mosaic Concert on Wednesday, 18th December at Burton Overy - Many of you will remember the group Mosaic coming last Christmas to give a concert of Christmas music.  They are very kindly coming again so look out for details of what promises to be another lovely evening of beautiful singing.

Concert at St Cuthbert's on 22nd March 2014 - We have booked Yvonne Bloor, an accomplished classical guitarist and composer to give a concert.  Yvonne has given concerts in many parts of the UK and abroad and her CD "Promise" was released last December.  It promises to be an entertaining concert given by a very high-quality artist.  It will also be a fund raising event for the Parish.  Please put this date into your diaries now.  Full details or the arrangements for the concert will be announced early in the New Year.

NOTICES

Burton Overy Christmas Tree Festival this year is being held on Friday, 6th, to Sunday, 8th December.  The Festival will end with a short service at 5.30 p.m. in the church (NOT 6.30 as listed in the services in the Magazine).  Proceeds from the festival will go to the Death Watch Beetle Fund and the Village Hall.

Thinking of Others this Christmas - Once again, we shall be supporting Women's Aid this Christmas time by sending food parcels and gifts for the women and children in their care.  We shall be making our usual collection of toys and gifts for children and young people.  These gifts will be Christmas presents so need to be new.  Please leave gifts unwrapped so that they can be assessed for their suitability to individual children .  We also want to maintain our support for the Welcome Group so please keep those tins and packets of unperishable goods and toiletries coming in.  The last date for collections which will reach those in need before Christmas will be Sunday, 15th December, at the Christingle Service.

Christingle-making at St Cuthbert's School is taking place on Friday, 13th December at 11 a.m.  We need more helpers to assist the children making the Christingles for the service on Sunday afternoon, 15th December.  If you can help, please contact Tessa Mynott on 259 2784 or Lyn Flowers on 0776 8794 662.

The Charity Christmas Card Shop at Leicester Cathedral is open for the sale of cards for more than two dozen national and local charities.  The charities receive 70p from every £1 taken (unlike charity cards bought from retailers who only give a few pence to the charity).  Not only are Christmas cards an important source of funding for the charities, they also help to raise awareness of their work.  The shop will open six days a week until Saturday, 14th December from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Christmas Teas at Launde Abbey on Sunday, 22nd December from 3.30 until 5 p.m. - An afternoon of Christmas activities, including a delicious Christmas tea with mulled tea, squash and cakes, before visiting Father Christmas in his grotto.  Adults £5. and children £6.  A family ticket is also available for £18 for 2 adults and 2 children under 12.  Pre-booking is essential by Wednesday, 18th December.

Coffee at St Cuthbert's - It is good to be able to socialise over a drink and biscuit after the 10.30 a.m. service but we are very short of volunteers to act as hosts.  We will shortly be saying goodbye to Jenny and Graham and then there will only be two of us who regularly serve behind the counter.  We have other regular weekly commitments and cannot be expected to also do coffee duty each week.  There is a list of service dates from the beginning of December until Easter on the table by the door and it would be appreciated if some other members of the congregation could commit themselves to make coffee occasionally, otherwise there will be some weeks when there will not be any refreshments.  You only need to provide milk and everything else should be in the cupboard.     AMY COOK

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

Keeping people in touch – Please do take copies of this news-sheet to anyone you know who might be interested, especially to those who can’t get to church at the moment.

Humour is a gift – Misprinted Classifieds:  "Dog for Sale ; eats anything and is fond of children."

Please pray:-
·         For the family and friends of Barbara Mort (wife of Bishop Mort) who has died recently.
·         For Peter Wood, John Spencer, Myra Humphrey, Judith Buffrey’s grandson Joel, Rachel Stevens, and all who are ill.
·         For the pupils and teachers of our local schools as they prepare for the run-up to Christmas.
·         For peace workers throughout the world.
·         For all those still affected by the devastating tornado that has hit the Philippines.

Proverb of the Week:  “The road the righteous travel is like the sunrise, getting brighter and brighter until daylight has come.  The road of the wicked, however, is dark as night.  They fall but cannot see what they have stumbled over  .” (Proverbs 4 vv 18 & 19)
