News in the Pews

Sunday 26th May – Sixth Sunday of Easter

Collect for Today
Risen Christ,
by the lakeside you renewed your call to your disciples:
help your Church to obey your command
and draw the nations to the fire of your love,
to the glory of God the Father.

Post Communion Prayer
God our Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ gives the water of eternal life:
may we thirst for you,
the spring of life and source of goodness,
through him who is alive and reigns, now and forever.

Ascension Day - Thursday, May 30th, 5:30 pm. A chance to climb to the top of Burton Overy Church Tower.  Come at 5.30pm - children must be accompanied by an adult.  A short service will be held at the top of the tower and at ground level to mark the Ascension of Jesus, so please come even if you don't want to climb the tower.  Refreshments after.

The flowers in church for Blooming Burton Overy were a delight.  The church was filled with some wonderful arrangements.  Our special thanks to Sally Muir and Jo Taylor for organising this event, which raised over £2000 towards Kidney Research, St Andrew's Church and the Village Hall.  Children enjoyed 'Name the lamb' - it was Dusty!
Ascension Prayer Flags are here again. This time of the year we are pray from Ascension to Pentecost for our nation, our friends and our family. There will be prayer flags for you to write the prayers that are on your heart. Also this year we are becoming a team and as a team we would like to pray together. You will receive a prayer card today to ask you to pray each day for one of the 5 churches: St Cuthbert’s, St Andrew’s, St Mary’s, St Peter’s and St Paul’s. We are also asking people to stop each day, wherever you are, at 12:00 pm from the 30th May to the 9th June and pray the Lord’s Prayer. The most effective prayer we have.

Please Pray for:
Those who are ill:
·   Mollie Alexander
·   Margaret Bannister
·   Sue Burnham
·   Elizabeth Tacey
·   Andrew and Mary Porter
·   Baby Willow Coates
·   Christine Higgins
·   Kris Plant

Pork Supper - Advance Notice/Date for your diaries
On Saturday the 6th July we are having our Pork Supper at 2 Stretton Road. This year we want to make the occasion more of a family focused affair so we are looking to start the event from 4.00pm with a children's entertainer at 4.30 - 5.30.
Following this the food will then be served, first to the children. The cost is yet to be fixed but will be announced as soon as we have estimated costs for the food.
Please put the date in your diaries and we hope to see as many of you there as possible.
QUIET PRAYER AND MEDITATION We shall meet again at 3.30pm.on Wednesday, May29th at our home - 20, Kingfisher Close.
We will just stop again for an hour in a busy world - to meet with God and each other, in an oasis of peace and calm.
If you would like to know more, please phone Christine Higgins on 259 2624 - or just come along. You will be very welcome.

St Cuthbert’s Theology Reading Group - Our St. Cuthbert’s Theology Reading Group invites anyone interested in exploring further their Christian faith/ knowledge, to join us at our monthly house meetings. We decide on a recommended book, usually by eminent Christian authors, which we read (one or two chapters at a time) and discuss over several meetings. Our discussions are usually lively and informative with the Rev. Philip Norwood giving us an experienced, guiding hand. Our next book, starting in June, is “God with us” by Rowan Williams.
Next meeting: Tuesday 4 June, 7-30pm.
Further information, contact Bert Patrick tel: 2593524; or email bertpatrick@tiltonbroadband.co.uk

Have you ever thought you might want to serve the Lord in some way within the church? There are many ways to get involved both big and small. Here are some of the ways you can at St Cuthbert’s:
·       Bell ringing- we have a great opportunity for people young and old to learn how to ring our lovely bells. If you are interested please speak to Roland Cook.
·       Choir – the choir is looking for new members young or old, experienced or novice, why not have a go? If you are interested please speak to Moira Bartlett.
·       Intercessions- if you like to pray we are looking for more people to intercede during both the 9:15 and 10:45 service. Please speak to Gemma Herrick for 9:15 and Carole Henson for 10:45 if you are interested.
·       Reading- if you like to read we are looking for more readers for our 9:15 and 10:45 services. Talk to Sarah Collins for 9:15 or Amy Cook for 10:45.
·       Sides people- if you love to welcome people we would love to have you on our team at the 10:45 please talk to Amy Cook.
·       Coffee Rota- do you like bringing a smile to people’s faces than why not serve them so lovely coffee in between the two services? Please talk to Kim if you are interested.
·       Sound and Projection - Dave and Simon would love someone to help with sound and projection. When one of them is unavailable they have to manage both by themselves. It is also likely that there maybe a Sunday where they are both committed to volunteering outside the church.  If you are interested please contact Dave Alexander.
