Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing. Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing. If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES
St Cuthbert’s and Great Glen Methodist Churches held an initial meeting to explore the possibilities of working together to achieve the most effective Christian ministry to the village. These arrangements are commonly known as a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP). It was decided to view the process as akin to a young couple beginning a relationship that might or might not end in marriage. The two churches are therefore going to “walk out together/go on some initial dates” by sharing a 10.30 a.m. service each month. These will be as follows:-
Jan 22nd Christian Unity Service at Glen Methodist Church
Feb 12th Holy Communion (CW) at St Cuthbert’s Church
Mar 18th All Age Mothering Sunday Service at St Cuthbert’s Church
April 5th Maundy Thursday Holy Communion at St Cuthbert’s Church (7.30 p.m.)
April 6th Good Friday Devotional Service at Glen Methodist Church (7.30 p.m.)
April 8th Easter Communion service will start at the Methodist Church and process to St Cuthbert’s Church to receive communion
May 13th Christian Aid Service at Glen Methodist Church
June 3rd Jubilee Service at St Cuthbert’s Church
Methodist Stewards and St Cuthbert’s PCC members will meet together as a steering group to regularly review outcomes and continue the discussions. (Next meeting 23rd March)
Sing Christmas with BBC Radio Leicester is at The Yews 7-8pm on Monday 19th December – a joint St. Cuthberts/Glen Methodist outreach event. Please come and join us if you can.
Burton Overy’s 12th Annual Christmas Tree Festival was once again a success – we had almost 2,000 adult visitors and large numbers of children who were able to view and vote for 60 trees. The imagination and ingenuity of the people who enter trees is impressive. Preliminary figures suggest a healthy profit – the bulk of the proceeds from the Festival will go into the St Andrew’s Church Building Fund recently established in order to meet the cost of repairs to the church following the discovery of Death Watch Beetle in some of the roof timbers. Congratulations to Fran Brown who highlighted the DWB problem with her tree entry. Congratulations also to the following adults and children whose trees were voted the most popular by visitors:-
Adults :
1st The Lucky Horseshoe Tree by Andrew Moyes
2nd Made in Burton Overy by Fawcett and Hawes Ceramics
3rd I’m a Celebri-tree, Get Me Out of Here by Lynn Bayliss
Children :
1st Sliding into Christmas by Cameron Masters (11)
2nd Darth Moose by Harriet Gill (9) and Freddie Gill (8)
3rd Stoneygate School Candy Christmas
Christmas Carol Services in the Benefice – With Christmas almost here, we can look forward to the local carol services that help make this time of year so joyous.
First on
Sunday, 18th December at 6.30 p.m. is the St Cuthbert’s Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. This is a traditional service with King James Bible readings in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first publication of the King James Bible.
Next, on
Wednesday 21st December at 6.30 p.m. is the Carol Service by Candlelight at Carlton Curlieu which is led by the Burton Overy choir and includes poetry and recollections of Christmas with refreshments afterwards.
Then on
Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. is the Family Carol Service at Burton Overy with a children’s tableau which is a lovely service for adults and children alike on the eve of the big day.
Christmas Card Board at St Cuthbert’s Church – Why not put up a single Christmas card to all church friends and donate the money you save on cards (and postage) to the Children’s Society? Jennie Wearne is organising this on the notice board above the wooden chest in the porch.
Church Cleaning at St Cuthbert’s Church – Thank you to all those people who have taken a turn at keeping our church clean and tidy during this year. There is now a new list for people to volunteer to clean the Church during 2012. The dates are in a fortnightly format. It would be very nice to see some new names. This year, there were only six people involved including two men but 38 weeks of the year were covered by just two people.
Mince Pies after the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Cuthbert’s Church. If you are kindly able to provide any mince pies, please would you let Amy Cook or Moira Bartlett know as soon as possible and also indicate how many you will be providing so that we can avoid having a huge surplus.
Women’s Aid – Women’s Aid were very grateful for the gifts of produce from our Harvest Festival. I hope you read the letter of thanks that was on the notice board. We also like to send them some little extras for Christmas as well as our continual support for the Leicester Welcome group. They would like non-perishable goods such as packet and tinned food, biscuits, jam, tinned fruit, tinned meat, etc and toiletries. Please add a little something to the box which is always in church for donations. The last date for delivery before Christmas will be Sunday, 18th December. (Hopefully I do empty the box every Sunday so that donations get to where they are intended). Thank you. Amy
Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy now has a hearing loop. If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position.
Please pray:-
• For all who are ill or suffering.
• For those who are bereaved, anxious, or lonely at this time.
• For our preparations for Christmas, for schools and young families, that December is more joy and less stress.
• For wisdom and justice in Russia concerning their election system.
• For the negotiations concerning the Euro.
Proverb of the Week: “Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.” (Proverbs 22 v 9)
