NOTICES

St Cuthbert’s Cleaning – We need some more people to join the rota of volunteers to clean the church once a fortnight. Please consider signing up for one or two of the dates on the cleaning rota at the back of church – the dates are Saturdays but the church can be cleaned at any time during the week before that Saturday date. Why not volunteer in pairs or threesomes to share the load and make it more fun!

All Souls Service – This is a gentle service that gives people the chance to hear the names of their loved ones who have passed away and to light a candle in their memory. The service starts at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, 2nd November at St Cuthbert’s Church. There will be two people with clipboards collecting the names to be read out at the appropriate moment during the service.

Harvest Food Thanks: Leicester Diocese thank all the churches and schools that sent tinned and dried food from their Harvest services for the Welcome Groups. The volume this year was amazing and we have never received as much before, which in the current economic climate is absolutely wonderful. The food will be stored in date order and drip-fed into the system over a number of weeks, thus helping the most deprived members of our community of need. Warm, heartfelt thanks to all involved with this shining example of Christianity in action.

Christmas Charity Cards: ‘Cards for Good Causes’ will be on sale in the Cathedral from Thursday October 22nd 2009 until Thursday 17th December 2009. Opening times will be 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. Monday to Saturday inclusive. ‘ChildAid’ to Russia & the Republics works with local partners to transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children, particularly children with disabilities, orphans and children living with families in crisis in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. Card orders 020 8460 6046, email giftsandcards@childaidrr.org.uk, website www.childaidrr.org.uk

Reasons to be Cheerful – “Sharing Faith in Everyday Life” – An invitation to the Bishop’s Lay Congress on Saturday, 14th November from 9.15 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. This is an opportunity for laity to spend a day with the Bishop of Leicester reflecting on how it is that we can both enjoy and share our faith more fully in everyday life with guest speaker, the Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Reading. For details, see leaflet in church or try the diocesan website www.leicester.anglican.org

If you can’t manage the whole day, you are still encouraged to go to part of it – Stephen Cottrell should be an excellent speaker.

St. Cuthbert’s Churchyard – we are very grateful to David Graves for removing the unsightly rubbish dump that grew over the years. Please can everyone put dead flowers etc. in the green and black rubbish bins outside the church so we can keep the churchyard tidy and attractive.

A Christmas Garland Course - Richard Attenborough Centre, Leicester University, November 2 – November 30. Tutor: Dr. John Florance

The course will explore why we celebrate Christmas as we do. ‘Christmas’ is, in fact, a great gathering together of customs, practices, folklore and habits, some very ancient, others more modern. We will be looking at many of these. Members of the class will be encouraged to discuss their personal family rituals and how the Christmas cornucopia has changed during their life-times.

Week 1: Introduction and the pagan origins of the season.
Week 2: Christmas Carols: Their history and meaning.
Week 3: The Victorians: Did Charles Dickens invent the modern Christmas?
Week 4: Santa Claus and modern innovations.
Week 5: Ghost stories, poems and other Christmas literature.

For details call the Richard Attenborough Centre 0116 2522455

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

WHY NOT put an extra can or packet in your shopping basket to bring to church services. St Cuthbert’s supports Leicester Cathedral’s Welcome Group for destitute asylum seekers – St Andrew’s supports a homeless charity. Items such as rice, pasta (mainly spaghetti), oil, sugar, tea, coffee, tinned goods (tomatoes, fruit, meat, fish, baked bans and sweet corn), shampoo, shower-gel, toothpaste, deodorants, shaving cream/gel and blades.

Laughter is a great gift – A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. 'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, 'Ryan, you be Jesus!'

Please pray:-

· For Ruby Tyler and her parents Phil and Kimberley as they bring her up in the Christian faith following her baptism.

· For Jayne Jackson, Michael Butterworth, Pat Graves (David’s mother), Kate Alexander, Marian McArragher, George Costello, and all who are ill.

· For the family and friends of Richard Dilks, John Packwood and Charles Baker who died recently.

· For honesty and integrity in public life.

· For Canon Andrew White, the Vicar of Bagdad, and all who are trying to create peace and make our world a safe place to live in.
