NOTICES
New Churchwardens
– At the recent AGMs, David Graves and Chris Otway were elected to serve as St Cuthbert’s Churchwardens and Richard Bloor and David Pease were elected as churchwardens for St Andrew’s at Burton Overy. We owe a great deal of thanks to David Webster, Kimberley Tyler and Paul Hadfield who have worked hard for their churches during their time as churchwardens, and we welcome our new churchwardens and thank them for agreeing to take up this important role for the next few years.

Rogation Sunday Pilgrimage this year is on Sunday, 2nd May. Programme and route maps are now available at the back of church – more will be printed on request. Do come and join us for part or all of the day – it’s a lovely sociable event – you can even join us just for lunch (BYO) at Burton Overy Village Hall or for tea and cakes after the short service at St Cuthbert’s Church at the end of the day. Times on the programme are approximate! Bring your friends to enjoy this day.

Christian Aid week takes place this year from Sunday, 9th May, until Saturday, 15th May. We desperately need volunteers to deliver and collect envelopes during that week. The money raised is vital for the help that is provided to poor and disadvantaged people across the world. If you are able to help, please contact Carol Neal on 259 2988.

A full Choral Evensong will be held at St Catherine’s Church, Houghton-on-the-Hill at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, 16th May with a choir of 30+ drawn from a number of our MP churches. If you would like to join the choir for this occasion, please contact Arthur Whitfield (259 2703). We have two of these big choral evensong services in the Mission Partnership each year, one in February and one in May, and they are really lovely services – do come and bring your friends, it’s open to anyone! Refreshments will be served after the service as it’s lovely to chat to friends from your own and other local churches – and the church has a toilet!

Ascension Day – We celebrate this with an early morning service at the top of the church tower in Burton Overy. Why not join us before you go to work – the service is at 7.30 a.m. and if you’ve time you can stop for breakfast at the Bloors’ house, The Springs in Carlton Lane. Climbing the tower is optional – the service is for two groups of people, one at the foot and one at the top of the tower. Ascension Day this year is on Thursday, 13th Mary. Roger Flowers will be leading the service as Mary will be away on a course (a great pity, she does enjoy it!).

A concert by the choir of Merton College, Oxford takes place on Saturday, 1st May at 7.30 p.m. at St Wilfrid’s Church, Kibworth. Tickets £7.50 for unreserved seats (£10. for reserved) tel. 279 2493. Part of the concert will be recorded for the BBC to be included in the six-part programme “English Story” presented by the historian Michael Wood later this year.

St Mary and All Saints’ Church Fete at Stoughton takes place on Saturday, 8th May from 12 noon onwards. Barbecue and teas, brass band, amusements and stalls. Free admission.

Children during the 10.30 a.m. Communion Services are invited to move into the north aisle (whether at Glen or Burton) after the Gloria to engage with the day’s bible story in ways that they will appreciate. They rejoin their parents in the pews at The Peace.

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

Laughter is a gift: Questions asked by tourists:
“What time does the Loch Ness Monster surface?”
“Is Wales shut in the winter?”

Proverb of the Week: “O God, I beg two favours from you before I die. First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.” (Proverbs 30 vv 7-8))
