NOTICES
Easter Flowers – A big “thank you” to everyone who helped to decorate our churches so beautifully for Easter. The flowers looked truly magnificent. Thank you also to all who contributed to the cost of the flowers.
Churchwarden Vacancy – There is a vacancy for a Churchwarden and applications will be invited prior to the Church AGM which will take place on Sunday, 1st May, after a short Evening Service. Details of the duties of the Churchwardens are available from our current Churchwarden, David Graves. Members of the Church are encouraged to think about whether this might be an opportunity for them to help the church by sharing the workload.
Pastoral Visitor – If anyone is interested in becoming a church pastoral visitor, please contact Carol Henson, Pastoral Assistant, on 240 3368 or email Henson@talk21.com
Five volunteers are needed at Great Glen to help clean the plastic chairs which we use from time to time for extra seating at services where we have very large congregations. The date set for cleaning these chairs is Saturday, the 18th June, from 10 a.m. until about 12 noon when tea and cake will be served! If you can help, please contact David Graves on 271 4420.
Burton Overy Village Photo – On the day of the Royal Wedding (29th April), every resident of Burton Overy is invited to St Andrew’s church yard for a village photo at 9.30 a.m. to mark the occasion. The photo will be taken from the church tower and will be finished by 9.45 a.m. – home in time to watch the TV coverage.
At the Burton Overy and Carlton Curlieu Church Annual Meetings, David Pease and Robert Brown were elected as churchwardens of Burton Overy and Sir Geoffrey and Lady Clarissa Palmer were elected as churchwardens of Carlton Curlieu. Richard Bloor was thanked for the time he had given to the job of churchwarden throughout his three-year term of office.
Bert Patrick stood down from the Burton Overy Church Council after 32 years. He recalled that he had been elected fairly soon after he and Betty came to the village. Bert has served as churchwarden and been instrumental in many church initiatives, not least the setting-up of youth activities, which have involved many of the families in the village. A warm thank you was given to Bert.
St Cuthbert’s Church Fete – We shall be holding a fete in and around the church on Saturday, 4th June. We are asking for contributions for tombola, bottle stall, unwanted gifts, jigsaws and children’s toys (complete and in good condition please). There will be a box in church from 1st May. Offers of help to man a stall and to help with setting up and dismantling on the day would be greatly appreciated.
Wanted books in good condition for stall at the Church Fete on 4th June. Collection can be arranged. Please contact Alan Selway on 259 2605.
Prayer List – During Mary’s absence, could people contact either David Graves, Roger Flowers or Angela Allen with the names of anyone who is sick and needs to be visited and/or prayed for.
Vergers at St Cuthbert’s – We need a few more people who would be willing to act as verger at weddings and funerals on an occasional basis. If you can help or would like to know more about what is involved, please contact David Graves on 271 4420.
Launde Abbey and St Martin’s House – Coming up shortly – two occasions to celebrate in the diocese:-
- Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May at Launde Abbey – a day to celebrate the re-opening of Launde Abbey after the extensive renovations. The day is planned for all the family – take a picnic or enjoy a hog and lamb roast. There will be plenty of music, including contributions from the Ratcliffe Chorale, the Sven Klangs Jazz Band and an Iona Big Sing. The day will culminate in an act of worship at 3 p.m.
- Friday, 10th June – Official Opening of St Martin’s House in Leicester – Service in the Cathedral at 2.30 p.m. After the service there will be a party and celebration for everyone in the precincts with food and entertainment. There will also be a chance to tour St Martin’s House. Every parish is invited to the service. To apply for tickets, please contact Julia Unna on 0116 261 5362 or Julia.unna@leccofe.org
Humour is a Gift – A Church Magazine bloomer:-
“Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again’, giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.”
Children during the 10.30 a.m. Communion Services are invited to move into the north aisle (whether at Glen or Burton) after the Gloria to engage with the day’s bible story in ways that they will appreciate. They rejoin their parents in the pews at The Peace.
Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy now has a hearing loop as part of the loudspeaker system. If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position and you will hear the service clearly.
Please pray:-
• For all to hear the message of Easter.
• For all who are ill or suffering.
• That peace may return to Libya and all the Middle East countries.
