If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine. Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing. Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing. If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

2. Money and Rewards 6th March Revd Mary Ireland
3. Money and Influence 13th March Roger Flowers
4. Money: Wealth and Poverty 20th March Revd Gordon Webb
5. Money and Generosity 27th March Revd Mary Ireland
Sparklers needs a leader – Roger Hutchings has helped lead Sparklers since it started but had to give it up in July. We are now really beginning to feel the loss and must find someone who is willing to chat to and get to know the families who come, and occasionally lead the short simple service (song, story, prayers). Please can everyone pray about this and think about who might be able to take on this role for us. Please contact Mary on 259 2238 with any queries or thoughts. Thank you.
St Cuthbert’s and Glen Methodists “Walking Out Together” – Today (22nd January) sees the first of the shared services between St Cuthbert’s and Glen Methodists. This Christian Unity Service at Glen Methodist Church is to share worship and allow us to get to know each other.
The next Timeout for families will be at The Yews on Saturday, 11th February, from 4 to 6 p.m. A social family time. We bring board games and puzzles, etc for older children and toys for younger ones. Buy your own drinks (and food if you wish) from the pub. We have a brief time to pray for people’s concerns at some point! We have been allocated a room/area to ourselves (far right as you enter the pub).
Burton Overy Community Choir will be singing for fun for the next three Mondays at 7.30 p.m. in the back room of The Bell Inn. Gareth Malone has shown us how much pleasure we can all get from singing together, so why not think about giving this local community choir a try? Pop in and see what they’re up to or contact Helen Alloway on 259 1011 or helenalloway119@gmail.com for more details. The three Mondays are 23rd and 30th January and 6th February.
Christmas Card Board – Thank you very much to everybody who participated in the Christmas Card Board. The money we saved on giving individual cards totalled £24.90 which will be given to The Children’s Society.
Eliminating Polio – Polio now exists in only four countries (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria) and Rotary and Bill Gates are now working together to eliminate polio completely. Mary is going to India with Rotary in February to assist with the National Immunisation Day on 19th February. Each child is given a small present, such as balloons, pens and pencils, toothbrushes, small bouncy balls, etc as a reward for children receiving the drops or their siblings who bring them. It has been suggested that church members might like to contribute some items for Mary to take (she has to take 100 in total). These must be of very low value or we will make it difficult for Indian Rotarians in the future NIDs when they give very little.
What are you doing for Lent this year? Why not try “Lent for Everyone: Mark Year B” by Tom Wright (pub. SPCK). Tom Wright is very easy to read – this is one review: “This book brings together the author’s profound understanding of scripture with an interest in everything from last year’s Libyan revolution and the ancient history of the Middle East to critiques of Classic FM, the coded meaning of stars falling from the sky and personalities as diverse as Bertrand Russell and Bob Hope. This is a rich, meaty feast that will challenge, inform and inspire, one profound daily reflection at a time.” Sounds interesting!!
A Musical Evening is being organised by Blaby Rotary Club at Leicester Grammar School on Tues 7th February, 7.30pm. to raise money for e-Ranger Ambulances which saves the lives of women in labour. These little motorbikes with side-cars don’t get bogged down in sand or mud and are cheap and easy to maintain. Tickets £5 from LGS reception (tel 2591903).
Humour is a gift – “Q. Which area of the Middle East was especially wealthy? A. The area around Jordan – the banks were always overflowing.”
Children during the 10.30 a.m. Communion Services - There are bible quizzes, colouring pictures, bible stories, etc available in a children’s area in the north aisle (whether at Glen or Burton). We hope that all children will come to the altar with their families to receive a blessing.
Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy now has a hearing loop. If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position.
Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.
Keeping people in touch – Please do take copies of this news-sheet to anyone you know who might be interested, especially to those who can’t get to church at the moment.
Please pray:-
• For all who are ill or suffering
• For all who are grieving.
• For Bishop Tim as he works on the government Select Committee concerned with the future of the House of Lords (who should be part of it, etc).
• For University of Leicester’s new project to find ways of reducing traffic emissions in European towns and cities.
• For those seeking employment as the jobless figures rise.
• For everyone affected by the Costa Concordia cruise ship crash.
Proverb of the Week: “Hard work means prosperity; only fools idle away their time.” (Proverbs 12 v 11)
