Palm Sunday – Bring your children to a family service in St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy at 10.30 a.m. when there will be a procession with a pony. Afterwards children will be able to stoke and sit on the pony if they wish.
Palm Sunday Service – Do come to St Mary the Virgin at Carlton Curlieu next Sunday evening (1st April) to hear St Cuthbert’s Church Choir sing ‘Lift High the Cross’ which is a lovely service with all the Easter bible readings.
Holy Week – There will be a half-hour reflective service each evening on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at St Cuthbert’s Church prepared for us by Roger Flowers.
Maundy Thursday – We have invited our Methodist friends to join us for a Holy Communion service at 7.30 p.m. with foot-washing. It’s a service full of meaning for us – do come if you can. Foot-washing is optional!
Good Friday – Do come and join us for breakfast at 8 a.m. at Burton Overy Village Hall. Enjoy eating breakfast with friends and neighbours while the children make ribbon streamers and other activities before we all sing and pray together for a short time. As part of our shared services, we have been invited to join the Methodists for their Good Friday service at 7.30 p.m. at their church.
Easter Sunday Family Service shared with Glen Methodist Church – Breakfast will be served at the Methodist Church at 9.30 a.m. Come and enjoy bacon butties, toast, marmalade, etc. This Easter Sunday, the main morning service will follow a different pattern. It will start at 10.30 a.m. at the Methodist Church with hymns, bible reading and a sermon and then a procession of witness to the village as we walk up to St Cuthbert’s to receive communion. Ribbon streamers made on Good Friday will be used for the procession. We hope most people will join the procession but some will need to go from one church to the other by car. There will be the usual Easter Egg treasure hunt for the children after the service.
‘Bringing the Beauty Salon to You’ takes place on Thursday, 26th April at 7.30 p.m. at St Cuthbert’s Church. We are promised great fun trying new products, sharing lots of tips and enjoying great customer offers. The firm is Proto-col. Please support this fund-raising event in aid of St Cuthbert’s church funds and come along with your friends! Cost £6 (payable on the door) to include a glass of wine and some nibbles.
There is a new selection of cards for birthdays and other occasions. They are produced for the Mothers’ Union and proceeds from the sale of the cards support MU work fighting poverty, injustice and tackling family issues. They are marked with the cost price on the envelope where the stamp goes but a donation of £1. per card makes a small contribution to church funds. Put the money in the box or give it to Amy Cook.

Needed at St Cuthbert’s Church – a second churchwarden to help David Graves with this important work. A new PCC Secretary is also required to take over from Moira Bartlett who has done this job for a long time! Please think seriously about whether you or someone you know could take on these roles from the AGM on 22nd April. A church cannot function without people willing to take on these important tasks and it’s only fair to share them around and not to expect anyone to do them for more than a few years. It is our policy that churchwardens should only stand for three years. They may be re-appointed after a break if they wish.
Jubilee Memorabilia – Have you got anything dating from the 1950’s that we could borrow? We are trying to create an exhibition in St Cuthbert’s Church for the village jubilee celebrations and are looking for absolutely anything from around the time of the Coronation. Newspapers, magazines, mugs, tins, records, clothing, etc – anything. We will take care of them. If you can lend us anything, please contact Mary on 259 2238 or email her at mary_ireland@btinternet.com
Concert in aid of Save the Children by LGS Big Band and Guests takes place on Thursday, 29th March, at 7.30 p.m. Tickets £5 available from Patricia Pegg on 259 1903 or peggp@leicesergrammar.org.uk
Humour is a gift – DID NOAH FISH? A Sunday School teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark?” “No” replied Johnny “How could he with just two worms.”
Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy now has a hearing loop as part of the loudspeaker system. If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position and you will hear the service clearly.
Please pray:-
• For all who are ill or suffering.
• For Rosie and Roger Hutchings, that God’s love may surround them.
• For the families and friends of those killed recently in Toulouse.
• For the added difficulties faced by our armed forces in Afghanistan following the murder of civilians by an American soldier.
Proverb of the Week: “Teach the wise, and they will be wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn more.” (Proverbs 9 v 9)
