At Communion Services

If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine.   Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing.  Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing.   If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES

TODAY Sunday breakfast will be served after the 8.30 a.m. service at St Cuthbert's Church.  Do join us for coffee and croissants, home-made marmalade, toast, etc.

Ride & Stride - Thank you to everyone who rode or strode to raise money, to everyone who manned our churches, and to Anne Bloor for organising a walk and tea at Burton Overy.  Our churches do benefit from funds raised for the Historic Churches Society.

Flower Demonstration: Glen village hall was full of people who really enjoyed hearing about Rosemary Mason’s involvement with the Royal Maundy Service at different cathedrals around the country over the years.  It was fascinating watching her make up a posy like the ones she makes for the Queen each year while telling us all about it.  We owe a great deal of thanks to Amy Cook for organising the evening and, thanks to people’s help and generosity, we raised £296 for St. Cuthbert’s Church funds.

Lunch and LEP discussions - On the 16th September we have arranged to share lunch with our Methodist friends after the joint 10.30 a.m. service and the meeting following it.  We would be grateful if people could offer to contribute food for this lunch - there will be a list at the back of church for people to indicate what they will bring (meat/savoury; salad; potato/bread; or desserts) and how many portions their offering will serve.

Midweek Holy Communion - Each month there is a short Holy Communion Service at 11.30 a.m. at St Cuthbert's Church after the Drop-In on a Thursday morning.  This is usually the second Thursday in the month but sometimes has to be a different Thursday depending upon the Vicar's diary.  Do come and bring any friends who might appreciate this.  It is usually a BCP service, depending on the wishes of those present.

Services in October - As you may have seen in the Parish Magazine, in October and early November there will be a run of non-communion services at the 10.30 a.m. services. Burton Overy has their Harvest Festival in October because the young families who organise their Harvest lunch are involved in running Team BOGG in September and St Cuthbert's Harvest Festival is also in October to allow the Primary School choir enough time at the beginning of the school term/year to prepare their contribution.  We also try to involve the Team BOGG youngsters in running a family service once their Grand Challenge is over and ... so it continues!  We hope you will understand and enjoy these special services as well as encouraging the young families who come - there is always Holy Communion at 8.30 a.m. and on Sunday, 21st October, there will be a lovely BCP  Holy Communion at Carlton Curlieu at which St Cuthbert's choir will sing.

Red Cross Big Wheel Appeal - More wheelchairs are needed locally to be loaned to people for temporary situations.  There will be a bucket in the back of our churches for the next few weeks if you would like to contribute to this appeal by the Leicestershire & Rutland branch of the Red Cross.

World's Biggest Coffee Morning takes place on Saturday, 22nd September, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Church of the Nativity, Cavendish Road/Richmond Road, Aylestone Park, Leicester.  This is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.  Stalls include books, cakes, raffle, tea/coffee, etc.  Admission 50 p.  All money raised at this event will help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.  Everyone welcome.

Mothers' Union Triennial Rallies - The Rally South takes place on Saturday, 15th September at St Dionysius, Market Harborough and commences at 1.30 p.m. (doors open from 1 p.m.).  The theme is 'Your Gift - Discover and Celebrate' (with an Olympic twist!).  Tickets are £2. each and are available from Pam Connor in the Mothers' Union office 2.48 or by post (enclose a SAE please) to St Martins House, 7 Peacock Lane, Leicester, LE1 5PZ (cheques payable to Mothers' Union, Diocese of Leicester).  Come and join us and bring your friends for a fun afternoon with speakers and entertainers..

Humour is a gift – A Rabbi said to a precocious six-year old boy, "So your mother says your prayers for you each night?  That's very commendable.  What does she say?  The little boy replied, "Thank God he's in bed!"

Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy has a hearing loop as part of the loudspeaker system.  If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position and you will hear the service clearly.

Lifts to Services - If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton and they will arrange one for you.

 Please pray:-
·         For Margaret Kirby, Richard Shepherd, Sharon Hurst, John Spencer, Jayne Jackson, Myra Humphrey, Judith Buffrey’s grandson Joel, Marion McArragher, and all who are ill.
·         For the families and friends of Philip Bannister, Peter Blagburn (Kate Alexander's father), Denys Bauldreay (Myra Humphrey's father) and Tony Poole who all died recently.
·         For the farmers as they wrestle with the difficult weather conditions.
·         For children starting new schools or pre-school, for pupils starting work for the first time, and for those preparing to go to university or college.
·         For those working for peace in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Proverb of the Week:  “Dishonest money brings grief to the whole family, but those who hate bribes will live.” (Proverbs 15 v27)
