At Communion Services

If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine.  Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing.  Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing.   If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES
Drop-In at St Cuthbert's Church takes place on the first Thursday of each month at 10.0 – 11.30 a.m.

The Benefice Prayer Group will continue to meet on Wednesday mornings to pray for the people and issues in our churches, villages and the wider world.  There is a Prayer Request Box at the back of St Cuthbert’s Church – please do use it and encourage everyone to use it whether they share our faith and our church-going habits or not!

Classical Guitar Concert held on 6th August. The concert was well attended and we were treated to a programme of delightful music.  After taking out the expenses for the drinks, and posters, we made £374 for church funds.  Thank you to all those who helped in any way.

Hog Roast Saturday 16th August  Have you purchased your ticket for the Hog Roast?  Sunday 10th August is your last opportunity as we have to give definite numbers to the butcher by Monday at the very latest.  Please let Roger or David know if you require a vegetarian option.  If you are able to provide a salad or a dessert we would be very grateful.  There is a list on the kitchen worktop at the back of the church for people to fill in, or alternately ring Amy Cook (2592610).  We will also need volunteers to help leading up to the event and actually on the day.  Would anyone who is happy to help, please give their name to David Webster or Roger Flowers

Revd Ian Phelps   Sadly the death has been announced of the Revd Ian Phelps who was Priest in Charge of Burton Overy, then part of the Gaulby group between 1991 and 1994.  He and his wife Shirley retired to The Sir John Morden College, Blackheath, London.  Ian was ordained in Southwark, London and spent the whole of his ministry in the Leicester Diocese.  He came to this Diocese as Youth Chaplain and subsequently held several posts in the Diocese including Vicar of Gaddesby for several years and Pastoral Assistant to the Bishop, when he resided at Houghton on the Hill.  He is survived by his wife Shirley and three sons.  There will be a memorial service in Leicestershire in due course.

Summer Evening Organ Recital at Leicester Cathedral, Tuesday 12th August.  The final Evening Organ Recital of this summer series is by Simon Headley, Cathedral Organist at Leicester Cathedral.  His programme will include pieces by Bach, Mendelssohn, Wolstenholme and Edmund Chipp.  The recital begins at 7.30pm.  Adults £7.50, Students with NUS £5 and under 16's are free if accompanied.

Greetings Cards  Please do have a look at the cards in church which are for sale.  There are several new ones.  Mother’s Union cards are priced at cost and that money goes towards funding Mother’s Union projects around the world. Some cards cover multiple needs.  “Thinking of you” could be in the loss of a loved one, or on an anniversary or because they are unwell.  Some cards are blank inside and some have a Christian message.  There are other cards in a separate box which are either handmade or from redundant stock for which we would appreciate a voluntary donation for church funds.

WHY NOT put an extra can or packet in your shopping basket to bring to church services.  St Cuthbert’s supports Leicester Cathedral’s Welcome Group for destitute asylum seekers and St Andrew’s supports a homeless charity.  Suggestions: rice, pasta (mainly spaghetti), oil, sugar, tea, coffee, tinned goods (tomatoes, fruit, meat, fish, baked beans and sweet corn), shampoo, shower-gel, toothpaste, deodorants, shaving cream/gel.

Keeping people in touch – Please do take copies of this news-sheet to anyone you know who might be interested, especially to those who can’t get to church at the moment.

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

Please pray:-

·         For David Neal, Peter Folwell, Phyllis Stanley, Margaret Wood, Peter Wood, Arthur Whitfield, Myra Humphrey, Rachel Stevens (the daughter of Bishop Tim and Wendi), and all who are ill.
·         For the soul of Pam Goadby whose funeral took place at St Cuthbert’s Church on 5th August.
·         For the soul of Terry Taylor whose funeral took place at St Cuthbert’s Church on 8th August.
·         For the people in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, and Gaza, that peace may return.

Thought for the day
When you are going through something hard and wonder where God is remember, the teacher is always quiet during a test.
