News in the Pews

Sunday 8th December – Second Sunday of Advent

Collect for Today
Almighty God,
purify our hearts and minds,
that when your Son Jesus Christ comes again as
judge and saviour
we may be ready to receive him,
who is our Lord and our God.

Post Communion Prayer
Father in heaven,
who sent your Son to redeem the world
and will send him again to be our judge:
give us grace so to imitate him
in the humility and purity of his first coming
that, when he comes again,
we may be ready to greet him
with joyful love and firm faith;
through Jesus Christ our Lord

Christmas Tree Festival
Thank you very much for your support of the Christmas Tree Festival over last weekend.  We were blessed with the weather turning dry and bright and we had many visitors.  The favourite trees in the Adult section were:
1. Sweet TREEts by Zoe Williamson and Louisa Rawlings
2. Not mushroom in the Inn by Barbara Lloyd
3. A Cuppa Tree by Neil, Tracey and Mollie Gregson
The favourite trees in the Junior section were:
1. Christmas stuffing with all the trimmings by Lottie King
2. We'll never 'tyre' of Christmas by George, Arthur and Charlie Barbour
3. Elf and Safe-tree by Charles Alan Robinson
We are most grateful to the Festival Committee, chaired by Gareth Dyer, for all their hard work.  Initial reports are that over £9000 was raised for the Church, the Village Hall and The Well at Kibworth

Dotty Fordham- I am sad to say that Dotty passed away this last Monday. She passed peaceful in her sleep with her family nearby. Dotty’s funeral will take place on the 17th December at 12:00 pm at St Cuthbert’s Church.

Welcome Project is in need of breakfast cereals, toothpaste, tooth brushes, hats and gloves. Of course the normal food items or extra Christmas items are always welcome too. So next time you shop please put in something a bit extra to help those in need.

Advent Prayer Course starting on Tuesday the 10th Dec and Wednesday 18th Dec at 7:00 pm
The course was set up by Pete Greig who was the founder of the 24/7 prayer movement. There are 8 sessions and during the four evenings we will do two each time. The sessions include 1.Why pray, 2.Adoration, 3.Petition, 4.Intercession, 5.Unanswered prayer, 6.Contemplation, 7.Listening and 8.Spiritual Warfare. These are sessions to help us go deeper into our understanding of prayer and how it can give us the tools to pray effectively. The last session will be held on a Wednesday as to avoid clashing with Carlton Curlieu’s Carol Service. We hope you can join us as we seek to deeper in our understanding. If you would like more details please contact Sarah (her details are on the front of the news sheet).

Alternatively there will be a weekly afternoon prayer course as well, if you would like to do that instead please contact Rev’d Sarah Collins – Tel: 07525 491496

ALPHA Course starting in January.
We will be running an Alpha course. This is a 10-week course each evening starts with fellowship around a hot meal and then goes into a talk about who God is and what the Christian faith is all about. It takes time to delve into the big questions people ask and helps us to discover new understanding. After the talk we will break up into smaller groups with a group leader and discuss the questions the talk has raised in a smaller setting.
If you are interested in either coming or helping in this course please talk to Kim or Sarah about how to come or how to be involved.
Toys on the Table this Christmas season we will also be collecting new toys for children who otherwise will get nothing for Christmas. We are asking people who are able to, to bring a new toy for children of any age and for a boy or a girl. We will be collecting them at our Christingle service, but if you are unable to attend please simply bring them to the church. Please do not wrap them.
Reminder: Candlelit Carol Service at Carlton Curlieu the 17th Dec at 7:00 pm. There will be refreshments at the service at Manor Farm opposite the church gate. There will be a raffle as well to help church funds.
9 Lessons and Carols at St Cuthbert’s 22nd Dec at 6:30 pm mulled wine and mince pies after the service.
