At Communion Services
If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine. Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing. Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing. If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES

All Souls Service is on Tuesday, 2nd November, at 7.30 p.m. at St Cuthbert’s Church. A gentle service for those who wish to remember the loved ones they have lost. During the service there is an opportunity to light a candle in their memory and the names of loved ones are read out during the service. Everyone is very welcome.

General Synod – We now have our very own representative on General Synod!! Congratulations to Anne Bloor who was recently elected as one of Leicester Diocese’s three lay members – so now if you want to know what goes on at the tope level of decision making in the Church of England, just ask Anne – her first Synod is in November.

Film Night at Great Glen Village Hall is on Saturday, 13th November. The film is “It’s Complicated” and it’s very amusing. Tickets are available only from Great Glen Post Office and cost £4. each. Mary is going to see it again because she enjoyed it so much the first time.

Home for Christmas? Would you share your festivities with an international student at a UK university who might otherwise be stuck on an empty campus? The Bishop’s Lay Congress 2010 takes place on Saturday, 27th November from 9.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. It is entitled “A Spirituality for the 21st Century : Thriving on our faith in challenging times”. Spend a day with Bishop Tim exploring the issues of how it is we can grow as disciples and more fully realise the abundance of life that Jesus offers us, with guest speaker the Rt Revd Gordon Mursell, former Bishop of Stafford and a well-known preacher, author and tutor in spirituality. His books include Out of the Deep (DLT), The Wisdom of the Anglo-Saxons (Lion) and a History of English Spirituality (SPCK). His more recent book is Praying in Exile (DLT 2005).

The Organ – Ancient to Modern – Sunday, 7th November at 6.30 p.m. Anthony Wilson will be performing music from five centuries (programme details at www.awwilson.org) in St Mary Magdalen Church, Knighton at 6.30 p.m. Admission free but a retiring collection will be taken to support the work of St Mary Magdalen and its choirs.

A Concert given by The City of Leicester Singers takes place on Saturday, 13th November, at 7.30 p.m. at St James the Greater Church, London Road. The conductor is Richard Archer and the accompanist is Mark Hammond. The programme includes Gloria (Vivaldi), Te Deum (Haydn) and Mass in D Major (Hummel). Tickets £10. Grand Bazaar at St James the Greater Church Hall on Saturday, 6th November from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Proceeds to be divided between church funds and the Leicester YMCA.

Did you know that the church has a service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child? This enables families to celebrate the birth of their child in a special way. We will be having a Thanksgiving within the 10.30 a.m. All-Age Service on Sunday, 21st November, and within the Christingle Service at 4 p.m. on 12th December, both at St Cuthbert’s Church.

Handel at Burghley takes place on Sunday, 14th November at 7.30 p.m. in The Great Hall at Burghley House, Stamford. Oakham’s celebrated Chamber Choir will be joined by the superb professional camber orchestra of Fiori Musicali who play authentic period instruments. The programme will include Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Music for Comus, Organ Concerto in F major, op4 no 5, Let thy hand be strengthened, Oboe Concerto in G minor and Let God Arise, HWV 256a. Children during the 10.30 a.m. Communion Services are invited to move into the north aisle (whether at Glen or Burton) after the Gloria to engage with the day’s bible story in ways that they will appreciate. They rejoin their parents in the pews at The Peace.

Humour is a gift: A Mum has just returned to Sparklers with her new baby. Her elder child, now at pre-school, said he remembered Roger (Hutchings) and then asked: “Was the lady Jesus there?”
