At Communion Services

If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine.   Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing.  Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing.   If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES

Mary would like to thank everyone for their good wishes, the beautiful cards and gifts and especially the table lamp which has pride of place in her new lounge.  She is very grateful.

Mary's Institution takes place this afternoon at 3.30 p.m.  If you're planning to attend this service, please can you arrange to share cars if at all possible as parking in Little Harrowden is no easier there than it is in Glen!!  They are laying on tea for you afterwards in the village hall which is virtually next door.

Ascension Day Service on Thursday, 9th May at 7.30 a.m. - This is a great opportunity to climb the church tower to remember the Ascension of Jesus Christ - the less adventurous stay on terra firma and sing at ground level.  The service will be led by Roger Flowers and afterwards bacon baps are served at 8 a.m. at The Springs, Carlton Lane.

The Bible Study House Group meets at The Springs, Carlton Lane, Burton Overy on Tuesday, 7th May, at 7.30 p.m. and will be looking at Genesis, Chapter 6.

Choral Evensong at Burton Overy on Sunday, 12th May at 6.30 p.m. - David Bryars is once again bringing his choir of former Cathedral singers to sing Evensong.  Another occasion to enjoy a traditional Book of Common Prayer service.

News in the Pews - During the interregnum, Pam Whitfield will be producing News in the Pews on a fortnightly basis.  The next edition will be in two weeks time on Sunday, 19th May.  If anyone has anything they wish to be inserted, please forward it directly to her by email, phone or to her house, details are shown at the foot of the back page.  Alternatively, please contact Roger Flowers (details also shown on the back page).

Fund Raising Events at St Andrew's Church - All proceeds to the Death Watch Beetle Fund

  • The Children's Variety Show was a huge success last Saturday.  Great virtuoso performances by a number of children and much fun had by all.  £600 was raised for the fund.
  • (1) Saturday, 18th May - Order and buy your summer and autumn fashions from Boden.  The sale will be in the Village Hall from  10.30 a.m. until 4.30 p.m.  Reduced prices.  20% commission on all sales will be given to the church.  Details from Sally Muir on 259 3581.
  • (2) Monday, 20th May - Professional violinist Tom Bowes will entertain us in St Andrew's Church.  His concert is entitled "JS Bach - A Pilgrimage".  Tickets cost £8 each (to include a glass of wine and canapés) and are available from Robert and Fran Brown (259 3184).  This is sure to be another memorable evening.

Thurnby Flower Club will be holding an Open Evening on Wednesday, 8th May, at 7.30 p.m.  The theme will be "In Florescence" with Nick Grounds.  There will be refreshments and a raffle.  All welcome.  Tickets are £8.50 (pay on the door or advance tickets from Sue Butterworth on 259 2609).

Church Magazine - A way to support the church and keep informed at the same time - Do you already subscribe and receive the re-styled quarterly magazine?  If not, for the modest cost of £5 for four issues a year the magazine will be delivered to you.  If you do already receive the magazine, why not encourage your friends and neighbours to subscribe too?  For further information/inclusion on the distribution list, please contact Lesley Selway on 259 2605.

Church Opening and Closing - We need people to volunteer to open and close St Cuthbert's church one day a week during school time.  So far, we have someone to do this on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - leaving just Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Can you help?  If so, please contact David Webster on 259 3717 or Roger Flowers on 0776 879 4662.

Messy Church @ School - As Tessa has broken her leg, there will only be one Messy Church at School this term - on Thursday, 20th June.

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

Humour is a gift – Written by an NHS medical secretary:  "I saw your patient today, who is still under our care for physical therapy."

Please pray:-
·         For Jim Dunning, Phyllis Stanley, Laura Record, John Spencer, Myra Humphrey, Joyce Whelband, Tessa Mynott, Helen Dartnell, Judith Buffrey’s grandson Joel, Rachel Stevens, and all who are ill.
·         For the family and friends of John Drabble and Keith Ward who died recently.
·         For the three servicemen who have recently lost their lives in Afghanistan and also their comrades who were injured.
·         For all those affected by the unrest and fighting in the Middle East countries.
·         For farmers that weather conditions may improve.

Proverb of the Week:  “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely but whoever follows perverse ways will be found out.” (Proverbs 10 v9).
