At Communion Services

If you are a communicant member of a Christian Church, you are welcome to come up to receive the bread and wine.   Otherwise you are welcome to either remain in your seat or come up to receive a blessing.  Keeping your hands down by your side will signify to the Vicar that you wish to receive a blessing.   If you have difficulty coming up to the Communion Rail and would like the Vicar to come to you, then please inform a sidesman.

NOTICES

Ascension Day Service - We are very grateful to Anne and Richard Bloor for the usual delicious breakfast they served after the Ascension Day Service.

Fund Raising Event at St Andrew's Church (All proceeds to the Death Watch Beetle Fund) - On Monday, 20th May at 7.30 p.m., professional violinist Tom Bowes will entertain us in St Andrew's Church.  His concert is entitled "JS Bach - A Pilgrimage".  Tickets cost £8 each (to include a glass of wine and canapés) and are available from Robert and Fran Brown (259 3184).  This is sure to be a memorable evening.

News in the Pews - During the interregnum, Pam Whitfield will be producing News in the Pews usually on a fortnightly basis.  However, the next edition will be in three weeks' time on Sunday, 9th June.  If anyone has anything they wish to be inserted, please forward it directly to her by email, phone or to her house, details are shown at the foot of the back page.  Alternatively, please contact Roger Flowers (details also shown on the back page).

Remedial works to the north porch - It is anticipated that work will start on the north porch during the next few days and will last for up to twelve weeks.  During this time, the toilets will be out of action and access to the church will only be gained via the south porch.  It is suggested that anyone approaching from Church Road use the kissing gate and footpath to the side in order to keep well away from the building site.

Church Magazine - A way to support the church and keep informed at the same time - Do you already subscribe and receive the re-styled quarterly magazine?  If not, for the modest cost of £5 for four issues a year the magazine will be delivered to you.  If you do already receive the magazine, why not encourage your friends and neighbours to subscribe too?  For further information/inclusion on the distribution list, please contact Lesley Selway on 259 2605.

The Kidney Care Appeal is Charity of the Month at Waitrose in Oadby for May so please do all your shopping there and put your green token in the KCA box when you leave the shop.  The more green tokens in the box means the more money the Charity receives at the end of the month!  The Kidney Care Appeal is a local charity and raises funds to benefit kidney patients and to carry out research into the causes and treatment of kidney disease in the Leicester region.  Lyn Flowers on behalf of her colleagues in the Leicester Kidney Exercise Team in the Department of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation at Leicester University thanks you for your support.

The Benefice Prayer Group will continue to meet on Wednesday mornings to pray for the people and issues in our churches, villages and the wider world.  There is a Prayer Request Box at the back of St Cuthbert’s Church – please do use it and encourage everyone to use it whether they share our faith and our church-going habits or not!

Choral Evensong at Wistow - There will be a Choral Evensong with the choir of St Anne's Church at St Wistan's Church,Wistow on Sunday, 28th May at 6.30 p.m.

WHY NOT put an extra can or packet in your shopping basket to bring to church services.  St Cuthbert’s supports Leicester Cathedral’s Welcome Group for destitute asylum seekers and St Andrew’s supports a homeless charity –items such as rice, pasta (mainly spaghetti), oil, sugar, tea, coffee, tinned goods (tomatoes, fruit, meat, fish, baked beans and sweet corn), shampoo, shower-gel, toothpaste, deodorants, shaving cream/gel and blades.

Hearing Loop – St Andrew’s Church at Burton Overy has a hearing loop as part of the loudspeaker system.  If you wear a hearing aid, adjust the switch to the T position and you will hear the service clearly.

Keeping people in touch – Please do take copies of this news-sheet to anyone you know who might be interested, especially to those who can’t get to church at the moment.

Lifts to Services – If you need a lift to any of our services, please contact Howard Bartlett (259 3747) at Glen or Richard Bloor (259 2440) at Burton Overy and they will arrange one for you.

Humour is a gift – Written by an NHS medical secretary:  "By the time he was admitted, his rapid heart had stopped and he was feeling much better."

Please pray:-

·         For Jim Dunning, Phyllis Stanley, Laura Record, John Spencer, Myra Humphrey, Joyce Whelband, Judith Buffrey’s grandson Joel, Rachel Stevens, and all who are ill.
·         For the family and friends of Floss Langton who died recently.
·         For all our churchwardens who are entrusted with the task of choosing our next vicar that they may make a suitable appointment in due course.
·         For the unrest and fighting particularly in Syria but also in all the countries where there is conflict.
·         That we may all enjoy a sunny bank holiday when it arrives.

Proverb of the Week:  “People who are proud will soon be disgraced.  It is wiser to be modest.” (Proverbs 11 v2).
